Little Swords

Gladiolus flowers are most often associated with gladiators, that is, after all, where they got their name. In fact, it is believed that gladiators fought to the death to win these perennials as a reward. A saying was coined based on this assumption: "Death or the gladiolus," meaning "all or nothing."

Latin name: Gladiolus

Fun facts:

  • Gladiolus is Latin for little sword.

  • It is the August birth flower.

  • As you have probably noticed, the latin and common name are the same.

  • The Bible often mentions lilies and it is thought that they're referencing gladioli because it is common in the Israel area.

  • These are the traditional gift for a fortieth wedding anniversary.
