Summer is gone, autumn is here and winter is on its way. Soon we will have the days of sledding and shoveling. Is your garden ready for the cold weather? Here are some steps you can take to ensure a clean garden in the spring:
# 1: Rake out all the leaves and take care of any other debris that isn't supposed to be there. The last thing you'd want to do in the spring is clean the sopping leaf remains from around your plants!
# 2: Weeding is also important to do before the snow comes. You'll want to start off in the spring with a clean slate as well as keep the weeds from growing worse. Weeds could also harm the plants in your garden if left to fester for too long.
# 3: Some plants need pruning and deadheading before winter. Pruning is basically cutting back what isn't wanted. Sometimes a bloom is cut off so it will grow back better or a large part is cut off because the plant was getting too big. Whereas deadheading is simply cutting away the dead parts of the plant. Both of these will help keep your plants healthy and make your spring easier to handle.
# 4: Autumn is also a good time to lay down fresh mulch. Not only is it a convenient and transitional time to do so, but mulch can help insulate your plants during the cold weather and protect their roots for the chilly temperatures.
